Make a Difference Volunteer

literacy tutor and students The Rancho Cucamonga Public Library Adult Literacy Program provides free adult literacy services to the local community. Adults who wish to participate as a student or as a volunteer tutor can contact Rosie Manela, Literacy Coordinator, at the literacy office at (909) 477-2720 ext. 5009. The literacy office is located at the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library at 7368 Archibald Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730.

The Rancho Cucamonga literacy program receives its funding support from a variety of sources such as: the California State Library, the City of Rancho Cucamonga, local Community Development Block Grants, private Foundations, and private donations.

Adult Learners literacy tutor and student
The literacy program can help English speaking adults learn and/or improve their basic reading, writing, computer, and life skills.

Students are matched with trained volunteer tutors for free one-to-one tutoring.
Instruction is based on the student's needs and goals.
Students and tutors meet twice a week for an hour to an hour and a half each session.
Interested adults can call the literacy office to make an appointment for an intake interview and a reading assessment.

Volunteer Tutors literacy tutor and student
Volunteer tutors work with adults who want to improve their reading and writing skills.

Tutors work on a one-to-one basis with a student.
Plan lessons around the goals of the student to integrate the learner's interests and needs.
Hours are flexible and you meet twice a week with the student at the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library.
Total volunteer time is approximately 5 hours per week, including travel and preparation time.

Tutor Training
This fast-paced course will prepare a tutor to teach reading and writing skills to students in our program using context-based, student-centered techniques.

Interested volunteers must complete a Tutor Training Workshop before
The Tutor Training explores techniques for word attack skills, vowels, and consonants that involve the students with the learning process.
In addition, tutors are expected to attend at least two in-service workshops or meeting per year.

The Adult Literacy Program has two additional components:

Families For Literacy
Computer Literacy

Both services are available to literacy program participants only.

What Can You Do To Help?

Volunteer your time as a tutor to teach someone to read and write.
Refer students, tutors and other volunteers to the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library literacy program.
Offer in-kind services such as printing, copying, supplying refreshments for meetings, or other services.
Contribute funds, materials, equipment or your time to fundraising efforts.

Families for Literacy (FFL) literacy tutor and student
Families for Literacy (FFL) services are available to adults who are enrolled in the literacy program and who have pre-school aged children. This exciting program is designed to break the illiteracy cycle by showing parents how to read to their children and introduce books into the home through the book give-away program. The program also offers parenting workshops, monthly storytimes and craft. For storytimes schedule, please call (909) 477-2720 ext. 5044. Registration is required to attend the FFL Storytime.

Computer Literacy literacy students learning computer skills
One-on-one computer literacy instruction is available to tutors and learners enrolled in the program. Lessons include computer basics, keyboarding, word processing and internet access. Lessons are an hour-long and reservation is required through the literacy office. Programs such as Ultimate Phonics, Ultimate Word Attack, Spell It Deluxe and Skills for Writers are available to tutors and learners to use as tutoring tools. Literacy Team on Good Morning America!
Barbara Potter and Charles Goolsby, a tutor/learner team of the literacy program, have been featured in a segment of Good Morning America. Charles shared his success story and has become a true literacy role model. Adults who wish to participate in the literacy program, either as a tutor or as a learner can call the literacy office at (909) 477-2720 ext. 5009.
